Most Websites Launch With Problems

Launching your first website is exciting. It's tempting to hit publish the moment it looks good and call it done.

But a few simple checks before you go live can save you from embarrassing broken links, slow load times, or missing pages that hurt your first impression.

Work through this checklist before you publish. It takes less than two hours and it's worth every minute.

Content Checks

All Key Pages Are Complete

Before launching, make sure you have at minimum: a homepage, an about page, a contact page, and a privacy policy. If you offer services or products, those pages should be live too.

Don't launch with placeholder text like “Coming Soon” or “Content goes here.” Those look unfinished and unprofessional.

No Spelling or Grammar Errors

Read every page out loud. Errors in your copy undermine trust immediately. Use a spell checker, but also do a manual read. Spell checkers miss wrong words used correctly (“their” instead of “there,” for example).

All Images Have Alt Text

Go through your media library and make sure every image has a descriptive alt text. This helps SEO and accessibility.

Technical Checks

SSL Certificate Is Active

Visit your site and check the address bar. You should see a padlock icon and your URL should start with HTTPS. If it shows “Not Secure,” your SSL isn't set up. Fix this before launching.

All Links Work

Click every link on your site. Navigation links, buttons, in-content links, footer links. Broken links frustrate visitors and look unfinished. A free tool like Broken Link Checker can scan your site automatically.

Contact Form Is Working

Submit a test message through your own contact form. Make sure the confirmation message appears and the submission arrives in your inbox. A broken contact form means you're missing real inquiries.

Website Loads on Mobile

Check every page on a real phone. Look for layout issues, text that's too small, or buttons that don't work on a touch screen. Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test for a quick check.

Page Speed Is Acceptable

Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights. Aim for a score above 70 on mobile. Large images and too many plugins are the most common causes of slow scores.

SEO Checks

Every Page Has a Unique Title and Meta Description

Open your SEO plugin (or your platform's SEO settings) and check that every page has a unique, keyword-focused title and a compelling meta description. Duplicate titles confuse Google.

Your Sitemap Is Generated and Ready

If you're on WordPress with an SEO plugin, your sitemap should be automatically generated at yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. Visit that URL to confirm it exists before you submit it to Google Search Console.

Google Analytics Is Installed

Install Google Analytics before you launch so you capture data from day one. You'll want to know your initial traffic sources, top pages, and visitor behavior as a baseline.

Legal Checks

Privacy Policy Is Published

If you collect any user data (through analytics, contact forms, or email signups), a privacy policy is legally required in most countries. Use a generator if you haven't written one yet.

Cookie Consent Is Set Up

If your site uses cookies (and it almost certainly does through analytics tools), you need a cookie consent banner. This is required under GDPR for visitors from the EU and many other regions.

Post-Launch Steps

Once your site is live, do these within the first 24 hours:

  • Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console
  • Test your site one more time on a different device
  • Share it on your social media profiles
  • Send an email to anyone who should know about it

ZipWP is a useful tool if you're launching a WordPress site and want to speed up the setup process. It handles WordPress installation, theme setup, and key plugin configuration automatically, which means you spend less time on technical setup and more time on your actual content.

FAQ

  • What's the most important thing to check before launching?

Your contact form and SSL certificate. If visitors can’t reach you and your site shows a security warning, those two issues alone can tank your credibility from day one.

  • Should I launch even if the site isn't perfect?

Yes. Perfect is the enemy of done. Launch with what you have and improve over time. A live, imperfect site is infinitely better than a perfect site that never launches. Just make sure the basics are working.

  • Do I need a coming soon page?

Optional. If your site isn’t ready but you want to collect email signups or build anticipation, a coming soon page with an email form is a smart move. If you’re ready to launch, just launch.

  • How do I know if my website is indexed by Google after launching?

Search for site:yourdomain.com in Google. If pages appear, you’re indexed. If nothing appears, submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and request indexing for your key pages using the URL Inspection tool.

  • What should I do first after launching?

Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console, verify your Google Analytics is recording data, and share your site publicly. Then get back to creating content. The launch is just the beginning.
